    TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF GOOGLE CLASSROOM IN ENGLISH LEARNING AMID THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN MANDAU SUB-DISTRICT

    This research aimed to explore the teachers’ perceptions on the use of Google Classroom in English learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic in Mandau sub-district. There were 41 English 41 English teachers who have used Google Classroom from 8 public senior high schools chosen as samples. This study used a quantitative method that employed questionnaire to collect the data consisting of 20 statements. Using SPSS 25, the quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The results show that the use of Google Classroom is considered very helpful during the pandemic with mean value 4.28 (very high). In the learning process, the use of Google Classroom is considered very practical, showing the mean value 4.02 (high). In the teams of ease of learning, Google Classroom is considered easy to learn the features and uses with a mean value of 4.27 (very high). The teachers are satisfied with Google Classroom as indicated by the mean value of 4.29 (very high). Therefore, the teachers felt that using Google Classroom in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic was effective because the application was a good way or alternative way to do the learning activity and made it easier to teach English during the COVID-19 pandemic

    A Descriptive Study Of Code Mixing Form In Kaskus Online Forum

    This research objective is to find out the form of code mixing in Kaskus online forum. The research data were collected in february 2017. The subject of this research was the user of Kaskus online forum in a thread entitiles “Cara Asik to Improve Your English”. The data were collected through online report. The subject consisted of 16 users with 48 posts, and 64 sentences. The research found out that the all of code mixing forms exist in Kaskus and several purposes of code mixing are found in this research. As a conclusion, the use of insertion of words is more dominant than other insertion in the research and Kaskus users are not using the code mixing for their incompetence

    THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING AND READING COMPREHENSION AT UNIVERSITAS RIAU

    This research aimed to find out the correlation between self- directed learning and reading comprehension of the fifth- semester students of the English department of FKIP Universitas Riau. The researchers used a descriptive quantitative method as the data approach. The samples of this research were 74 students from the fifth-semester students of the English department of FKIP Universitas Riau. The research instruments are a questionnaire and a test. The questionnaire is for the data on self-directed learning while the test is for the data on reading comprehension. To analyze the data, the researchers employed SPSS Statistics 25. The data analysis showed that the mean score of the student's self-directed learning is 215.18, classified as moderate level, while the mean score of the student's reading comprehension is 56.35, categorized as moderate level. Moreover, the research finding showed the correlation coefficient of the two variables is 0.694, indicating a positive and moderate correlation. Also, the determinant coefficient is 0.48 which implies self-directedlearning has a 48% influence on the students’ reading comprehension, leaving the other 52% to other factors. After finding that there is a moderate relationship between self- directed learning and reading comprehension, it is suggested that students should apply self-directed learning activities well, for it can result in better reading comprehension. This is mainly because self-directed learning gives them the freedom to choose their own reading materials and learning objectives

    STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF GOOGLE CLASSROOM ON LISTENING COMPREHENSION SUBJECT AT ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM OF UNIVERSITAS RIAU

    The purpose of this study is to find out the students' perceptions on the use of Google Classroom on listening comprehension subjects during the course of the Covid-19 pandemic. In this study, the method was quantitative research and the instrument used was a questionnaire designed by Chyntia (2018) and Shaharanee et al. (2016). There were 20 items in the questionnaire. Eighty-five students from the English Study Program at Universitas Riau participated in this study. The data were analyzed using frequency and mean. The findings indicate that the students positively perceive the use of Google Classroom on listening comprehension subjects. The results show that the Google Classroom used in listening comprehension subjects was efficient because the application became an alternative way to conduct learning activities from home. The students agree that Google Classroom is an efficient, comfortable, and economical application for listening comprehension subjects

    The Perspectives of Local Wisdom in Conservation and Biodiversity Management of Fish Species at Rangau River, Riau Province, Indonesia

    . This descriptive research was conducted at Rantau Kopar village, Rokan Hilir District from January to June 2017. The reason for this study is due to the drastic declining of biodiversity of fish species at Rangau river despite the existence the local wisdom to protect the watershed in the area. It is aimed to discover the perspectives local wisdom in preventing the decreasing of fish biodiversity at Rangau river. The employed sampling technique was snowball technic sampling which involved 30 respondents. The primary data were obtained using observation and interview; the secondary data (documents). Data consist of community composition, livelihood, community participation in preserving the local wisdom, the synergy between the local wisdom and the policies of the local administration. The data were computed in percentage and were analyzed descriptively. The findings demonstrated that the local wisdom was compiled by the local community whose livelihood as fishermen. Conversely, in 2017, the local people did not comply with both sanction and the local customary law, there had been careless exploitation of the water across the watershed to be oil palm plantation area and the increasing number of oil palm farmers. This study concludes that the main threat facing the local wisdom is that the policies of local administration are not synergic with the local wisdom as stipulated in the regulations and conservation of the area across the watershed of Rangau.     The connection between prospective teachers’ procedural and conceptual knowledge with problem-posing skills of fractions

    This study examined the connections between procedural and conceptual knowledge of addition and subtraction of fractions with the problem-posing skills of prospective primary teachers. The applied method was a correlational study with structural equation modeling-partial least square (SEM-PLS) analysis. The sample in this research was 101 third-year students from a primary teacher education study program of a public university in Riau, Indonesia. The results showed that prospective primary teachers have high procedural knowledge and problem-posing skills on addition and subtraction. However, they have poor performance on problems related to conceptual knowledge of addition and subtraction of fractions. Then, the results also revealed a significant connection between procedural and conceptual knowledge with problem-posing skills on addition and subtraction of fractions of prospective primary teachers. Improving prospective primary teachers’ procedural and conceptual knowledge could raise their problem-posing skills on adding and subtracting fractions

    Online Formative Assessment in Mathematics Education: Prospective Primary Teachers’ Understanding of Rational Numbers

    This study sheds light on prospective primary teachers’ understanding of rational numbers. This is an experimental study that aims to evaluate prospective primary teachers’ mathematical and didactic knowledge of rational numbers through online formative assessment. The participants were 38 prospective primary teachers from a primary teacher education study program at a public university in Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia. This study indicates that the prospective teachers have insufficient knowledge of rational numbers, and they possess better mathematical than didactic knowledge. This study also reveals a significant increase in prospective teachers’ mathematical and didactic scores from the first test to the second test

    Prospective elementary teachers’ informal mathematical proof using GeoGebra: The case of 3D shapes

    Mathematical proofs play a paramount role in developing 21st-century skills, and the use of technology in mathematics learning has widely paved the way in the instruction of mathematical proofs. In mathematics education, GeoGebra has a significant role as a dynamic mathematics software in supporting students' learning process. This study aims to use GeoGebra in supporting prospective elementary teachers' mathematical proofs of the volume of 3-D shapes. This research used a case study method with 23 first-year prospective elementary teachers as participants from a public university in Riau, Indonesia.  The data were gathered by means of students' work recordings in the GeoGebra classroom and video recordings from their interactions in the course of small group and classroom discussions. The videos were transcribed using verbatim, and then the mathematical proofs were analyzed using praxeological analysis. The findings show that prospective elementary teachers still had challenges to connect the construction of the volume of 3-D shapes using GeoGebra to its informal mathematical proofs. However, GeoGebra provides an opportunity to learn informal mathematical proofs for prospective elementary teachers
